Regular Laxative Use Linked to Higher Dementia Risk
Regularly taking laxatives is linked to an increased risk of developing dementia as compared with occasional or no laxative use, a recent study found. The risk for all-cause dementia rose by up to 51% with regular laxative use, while the risk for vascular dementia went up about 65%.
The study involved over 500,000 participants aged 40-69 years without a history of dementia and included an average follow-up time of 9.8 years. Regular laxative use was defined as taking laxatives most days of the week for 4 consecutive weeks at baseline.
Researchers discovered that using multiple laxatives rather than a single type increased dementia risk even more- by up to 90%. However, they did note that Alzheimer's risk did not increase with any type of laxative use.
Most laxatives are not recommended for regular use, and experts advise trying natural ways to relieve constipation first, including adding more water and fiber to your diet.
Walk 500 More Steps a Day to Cut Heart Disease Risk
Walking an additional 500 steps per day can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart failure by 14%, according to a new study. In addition, taking a total of 4500 steps per day can lower the risk of having a cardiovascular event by 77% compared with taking fewer than 2000 steps.
“Steps are an easy way to measure physical activity… We were surprised to find that every additional quarter of a mile, or 500 steps, of walking had such a strong benefit to heart health,” said Erin E. Dooley, Ph.D., a lead researcher of the study.
The study followed 452 older adults who were all 70 years of age or older. They each wore accelerometer devices at the hip to track their daily steps and were monitored for a cardiovascular disease event over the 3.5-year follow-up period.
Given that participants who took less than 2000 steps per day were at the highest risk for a cardiovascular event, Dooley advises older adults to add 500 more steps at a time to gradually get above this amount.
